How sunscreen use can dramatically slow ageing

A study by the Annals of Internal Medicine, has found that applying sunscreen on a regular basis can dramatically curb the skin ageing progress. In the study, researchers tracked 900 participants under the age of 55 for more than four years.

They observed that after four years of applying sunscreen on a daily basis, participants who had not failed to apply sunscreen regularly showed no detectable signs of skin ageing. Professor Adele Green said: “This has been one of those beauty tips you often hear quoted, but for the first time we can back it with science”.

Green added that the study showed that people who had not yet reached middle age had the opportunity to make a difference in their skin ageing process by using sunscreen. Skin checks revealed that participants who applied sunblock almost every day not only appeared not to age but also had 24% less skin ageing compared to people who only used sunscreen on certain occasions.

Professor Rodney Sinclair, Director of Dermatology at Epworth Hospital at the University of Melbourne, however urged caution in interpreting the study’s results as the study looked “at the hands rather than the face and it looked at one component of skin ageing which is fine lines and wrinkles”. Adding that “at the end of the day, the most important thing about regular use of sunscreen was to prevent skin cancer”.
